ABOUT US

WHO WE ARE

K.E.W Paddlers are a not for profit Family & Friends group affiliated with the British Canoe Union (BCU). We were founded in 2004 and are run solely by volunteers. Our base is located on Locks Island at Wansford Lock near Peterborough. We have people attend from Rutland and the Northamptonshire area mostly but anyone is welcome. KEW Paddlers aim to give people a kayaking experience with the goal to encourage families and friends to come along. There are five to six weekends a year and some odd days, for upcoming dates please see our Events page.

THE WEEKEND

The weekend starts on Friday at 18:30. Once camp is set up, supper and entertainment are provided. Entertainment is generally a range of games and socializing. You’re more than welcome to bring along some of your own games!

Saturday starts with a hearty breakfast followed by a short lecture on safety and equipment, followed by a session on flat water; this gives us the chance to look at your ability and paddling skills.

Confidence building is the key to successful paddlers; you will be coached through various skills, such as ferry gliding, breaking in and breaking out, turning, edging, low brace, high brace, reading and understanding water the main focus on your body, boat and blade position. The coaches will show you how to surf a wave (if you choose). It won’t be long before you can do it clean, with or without your paddle. We will also look at different types of boats & paddles used today.

On Sunday, we begin to build on the skills and confidence developed on Saturday.

After a fun-packed weekend, we break camp by around 15:00. So free yourself from your daily routine and turn your back on the boring daily grind. Let the blood start pumping, grab your shorts and brace yourself for an unforgettable weekend!

Kayaking & Canoeing is an exciting and enjoyable sport. It is also very safe if all the rules are followed.
